The Processes of an Artist

When we see a hauntingly beautiful painting or a melodic tune, it’s easy to think of artists as gifted, creative souls who can magically conjure beauty and meaning out of mere material. But underlying the glitter of their craft is a meticulous methodology that shapes and guides their journey. Let’s embark on an exploration of these processes that help artists navigate the labyrinth of creation and produce masterpieces that inspire, provoke, and captivate.

The term “artist” has many synonyms that capture its essence from different angles: creator, craftsman, designer, virtuoso, maestro, and more. But they all share one common facet: a profound love for their art. Their passion fuels their pursuit of excellence, while they challenge themselves to push boundaries and explore the unknown. Striking this delicate balance—akin to walking a tightrope—is what gives their work its depth and authenticity.

Creative Process

Artists employ a wide range of mediums and techniques to convey their artistic vision. They may draw inspiration from their surroundings, personal experiences, cultural influences, historical context, or abstract concepts. They experiment with various themes, materials, and artistic techniques to develop their own style, which they then utilize to create a unique body of work.

This may include drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, photography, installation art, and even performance art. Some artists work alone, while others collaborate with other artists and art professionals. Their artwork can be displayed in galleries, museums, public spaces, or shared online through digital platforms.

While some artists work under a commission from a private client, the majority of them earn their income through the sale or rental of their works. In order to sell or rent their artwork, they must promote it through marketing and networking activities. They also engage in professional development to further enhance their skills and stay abreast of new developments within the arts industry.

Artists are their own biggest critics. They are loyal to their skills, personality, and unique style. They are unafraid to embrace their quirks and eccentricities and to find beauty in the most mundane of things. They are curious, observant, and constantly seeking to evolve their talent, so they can give their full potential in the most honest manner possible.

Being an artist is a lifelong journey filled with ups and downs, successes and failures. It requires a deep appreciation for the arts, as well as an open mind to criticism and learning from failure. Ultimately, being an artist means always pushing yourself to your fullest potential. Never settle for less. Originality didn’t conveniently die just when you needed it most, so keep searching for it in overlooked periods of history, discredited styles and ideas, and forgotten memories, objects, and symbols. Then, incorporate them into your own work over and over again. After all, the best way to learn is by doing. And the more you do, the better you become. —Daniel Hsu, Ph.D., is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Houston and the founder of The Artist’s Way.
